4 festive food hacks to eat guilt free this Christmas

The spirit of Christmas is a wonderful time for the magic of belief!

Believing the story of Santa is much like believing in anything. Once enough people are all on the band wagon it becomes normal even if there is really no proof. Very much like the placebo effect when it comes to health and wellness.

There is a belief that in order to have a healthy body you MUST avoid all food groups that will create weight gain.

Imagine being able to eat to the delicious food you love without the guilt that follows?

Well it’s not a placebo effect – it is all about balance and awareness.

The truth is that when you feel satisfied and your nutritional needs are met you are less likely to feel like over indulging. You will still indulge however it will be a lot less frequent than you have previously experienced.

During the warmer months here in the southern hemisphere you will be losing more body fluids so it is also incredibly important to keep your body topped up with ‘wet foods’.

What are wet foods you ask? These are foods that are higher than 80% water content.

Usually consisting of fruit and vegetables. Sounds like common sense right?

It is however when our body is stressed, busy or not optimally hydrated it is programmed to head for the ‘sweet stuff’ over the ‘wet stuff’.

The other challenge can be getting fruit and vegetables into the people you are feeding so often purchasing the quantities your body needs will be avoided so there is less wastage.

The volumes of produce we need in order to by optimally hydrated is two to three servings at each meal. The serving will depend on your gender, size, age and lifestyle.

The belief of five plus a day doesn’t even touch the sides of how much water it will provide you.

So why is drinking water not as effective?

When you eat foods high in water you are also gaining vitamins, minerals and fibre in a one stop shop (quite literally). It also allows your body to receive fluid before you need it whereas drinking it acts a bit like an “ambulance at the bottom of the cliff”.

Prevention is always easier and better than cure.

This is why my recipes in the guilt free food school are so effective for your health and wellbeing.

They literally hydrate you from the inside out. They also nourish you because by including the right combination of food and balancing them with fibre, protein, fat and carbohydrate your blood sugars also stay stable.

As a result you feel so much more in control around festive food.

My guilt free foodies have said they think that they are magic how they squash their appetite between meals however evidence-based science would show they lower the glycemic impact on your body.

This means that you have less highs and lows with your blood sugars levels during the day so therefore stay fuller for longer.

Whether you like them because they make you feel good or eat them because they meet your nutritional needs. The guilt free recipes in the food school are really like no other.

So at a time of year that you could be avoiding the food because of lack of control or you might be at the other end of bell curve and over indulging. Choose meals that are going to keep you hydrated over festive season are a great choice.

You can create your own meals with the formula I have published in my book “Wet Your Appetite”. Alternatively if you are busy like me and would like them done for you there is over 200 of them for you to use when you are entertaining over the silly season.

One of the key components to eating guilt free is ADDING meals that nourish your body and mind instead of focusing on what you must remove from your diet.

So when you go to your Christmas lunch, have your Christmas drinks, get surprised by another morning tea or your neighbor turns up with baking you know how to balance healthy eating.

You will no longer have to feel guilty when you eat the festive food and you can enjoy yourself for the last few weeks before Christmas.

Here are four festive food hacks to eat guilt free for Christmas:

1)      Eat a balanced guilt free breakfast - include your favourite wet carbs with produce and protein so your body gets nourished within the first few hours of waking or join the guilt free food school for a collection of guilt free meal options.

2)      Focus on produce that will give you the most bang for your buck - vegetables have a wider scope of vitamins and minerals than eating just fruit.  They have a higher percentage of water content and help you stay hydrated throughout the hot summer days when you are rushed of your feet getting organised for Christmas day. Take some baby carrots in your bag when you are trudging the shops and add them to the lunch you buy out.  Choose a takeaway that you can add vegetables to this might be a side salad at the café or choosing a cuisine like Mediterranean, Turkish, Japanese or Thai that naturally include vegetables in their dishes.

3)      Eat a snack of produce and protein in the afternoon before you rush out the door to your evening event.   “Hard vegetables” can be scarce from the canape’s menu at your evening event so choose to have some before you go so you have ticked it off the list for the night.  That way you can enjoy what you are offered, and a small portion of the food will fill you up faster.

4)      Carbohydrates are plentiful in many shapes and forms at meals and between meals. Stay aware of the number, type and volume of carbohydrates you are eating out socially. Then you can adjust your next meal to balance what you had at your previous eating time. I show you how to do this in the guilt free food school and support you every step of the way in the private community.
